One of the most devastating things that happens to believers all the time is discouragement. When we really think about and consider what is happening in the mind and heart of a discouraged person, we would realize how important it is to treat this condition with love and encouragement as quickly as possible.
When people are struggling and dealing with all the disappointments of life, they can start to shut down in stages and this is a warning sign to friends and loved ones that ENCOURAGEMENT and LOVE are needed desperately to revive that person.
When a person is physically sick with a terminal illness, the progression of the disease can often start to cause symptoms and manifestations that indicate that the person is dieing. When we see these things happening we can either a:) intervene with medical treatment or b:) make preparations for the death of the person. Either way, we need to recognize the seriousness of the victim’s state of health.
In the exact same way, a person which is going through severe and terminal discouragement will give off signs and indications of “shutting down” that tell anyone with the eyes to see that the person is starting to disconnect from this world like a terminal patient does when they are about to die. This is a sign to anyone watching to get in and encourage and strengthen that person as quickly as possible.
As Christians, we need to constantly be on the lookout for our brothers and sisters to ensure they stay encouraged and positive despite the difficulties of life. Our world is becoming dark and discouraging in many ways and it’s up to the Children of LIGHT to remember that we bring light and hope and LOVE into every situation. We are called to pray and speak words of life into our brothers and sisters much like putting medicine into the body of a sick person.
We need to take this assignment seriously because … It’s Fatal.
A few years ago while ministering to a person struggling terribly with discouragement and depression, I came to see by the Holy Spirit that the assignment of discouragement is an assignment of suicide. When this assignment is left unchecked, people will self destruct in varying ways and ultimately it can lead to such despair that the person will treat the condition with their own death.
When we realize that the extreme case of discouragement leads to the death of the person it contaminates, we take discouragement much more seriously than just a “bad mood” or a poor attitude. We need to realize as the CHURCH that our role is critical to ensuring that not only do people not live for extended periods of time in a discouraged state, but that they are ENCOURAGED to the point of positive movement and growth.
When we realize that discouragement if left unchecked can lead to death and does in many people each year, we will not be glib or light about making sure people receive the encouragement and support they need to reinvigorate a VISION for their lives and gain a fresh new perspective on life. That is the call for all Christians and the Church of Jesus Christ in these days.
So the next time you detect someone is discouraged, don’t just pat them on the back. Get them among people who will love them and ENCOURAGE them to move forward in God!
